Tony Denton Pleads Guilty to Child Molesting Charges; Returns to Trinity Baptist Church

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

From the Fayetteville Observer:

Ex-minister pleads guilty

A former minister of Berean Baptist Church pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges he molested young girls there 30 year ago.

Antony Phillips Denton, 56, who now lives in Jacksonville, Fla., was indicted in 2007 on 16 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.

Denton was accused of molesting three girls who were church members between 1977 and 1981. At the time he was serving as a minister of music.

The girls are now married and have families of their own.

Denton pleaded guilty to 13 charges and entered an Alford plea on the other three. Under an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a conviction.

Under a plea agreement, Denton was given three three-year sentences. All were suspended, and he was placed on unsupervised probation.

Denton must now register as a sex offender.
Former members of Trinity have reported to me that Denton is now back at Trinity Baptist of Jacksonville, where his wife is employed as a teacher. The church has not been warned of Denton’s history. He is not restricted from the church property, which includes a day care center, a kindergarten, an elementary school, and a high school.

Eastside Baptist Church, Asheboro, Shelters Sexual Criminal Tony Denton

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Dr. Roy Grigsby, Pastor, has been told that Denton is out on bond for a sex crime against a minor, and abused his office while in Fayetteville, NC. Yet the church congregation has not been warned. So if you know anybody who attends that church, please warn them. Denton ultimately pleaded guilty: 13 guilty pleas and 13 convictions.

Denton sexually preyed upon several under-age girls back in the late 70′s, early 80′s while serving as youth pastor in NC. His crimes were not reported to the authorities, and the parents did not press charges. Needless to say, no other churches were warned.

Tony left the state, became involved in the ministry of Trinity in Jax as custodian, and eventually moved to the pastoral staff a good number of years later. There is no statute of limitations in NC on these crimes and charges have recently been filed by some of the girls, now adults, who had been victimized by him.

Denton pleaded guilty, received an incredibly light sentence, and returned to Trinity Baptist (not on staff). Neither the congregation at Trinity nor at Eastside have been warned of his history. He visits Eastside because his daughter attends there.

Tony Denton, former Counselor at Trinity Baptist in Jacksonville, Arrested on 16 Counts of Sexual Indecency With Children

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Of course, Trinity has refused to say what Denton’s previous post was (Associate Pastor of Counseling) and has lined up its spokesman and has professed great concern about the matter, stressing that the details are not yet known, etc. Here are the news articles and videos: (second blurb on page)

Video (I couldn’t get this video to play. You may have better luck.)

Here are some of the comments from people closer to Trinity, some posted last year when Denton was fired and some posted this past week as word of his arrest got around:

Tony Denton, Trinity Baptist Church Jacksonville, Arrested for Child Molesting

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Church where abuse occurred: Unnamed North Carolina Baptist church
Current church: Trinity Baptist Church – Jacksonville NC (Staff member)
Current Pastor: Tom Messer
Offender: Tony Denton
Church Discipline Taken: None

From News 4 Jax:

Denton and his family have attended Trinity Baptist Church for more than 10 years. Trinity Baptist, which is located in the 800 block of Hammond Boulevard, is the same church where Dr. Robert Gray was the longtime pastor.

Denton’s arrest came on the heels of allegations first leveled in May 2006, when Gray was arrested on sexual battery charges. Since then, four people have come forward to say they were abused.

Gray is now accused of multiple accounts of sexual assault, and his first trial is scheduled for next month.

“He is a member here at our church and was a former employee here at the church,” said Trinity Baptist Associate Pastor Gary Judd.

Officials at Trinity Baptist would not comment on how long Denton worked at the campus, what his position was nor how much contact he had with children.

Denton was fired from Trinity when Bob Gray was arrested. Coincidence? Ya think?
